Countless children got a chance to become surgeons for a day on Sunday in Columbia County.
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The Geisinger Surgery Institute in Columbia County held its second annual Surgeon Junior Sunday afternoon at the Bloomsburg Children’s Museum.
These little scientists got a chance to “treat” patients, getting a good look at some intestines and even performing eye surgery.
Organizers say this is a way for the real surgeons to get to know their community.
Dr. Rebcca Hoffman, Geisinger Colon, and Rectal Surgeon, Vice Chair for Education and Research, say, “I think that we don’t get an opportunity as much to be community advocates. People don’t know us, as well, and going into surgery is a really scary time. So we just want to make sure that we’re approachable, especially if you’re a kid it could be a scary time. So just knowing we’re approachable and people know what we do and the treatments we’re able to offer.”
Organizers hope this event in Bloomsburg will inspire young minds to join the medical field when they get older.
